Completed Projects FRR has provided technical assistance to major donors in the design and implementation of the following projects: • Creating Protected Areas for Forest Resource Conservation Using Landscape Ecology– funded by GEF/UNDP: This was an Integrated Conservation & Development project (ICDP) managed by FRR and consortium partners which has piloted a landscape ecology approach in 3 protected areas (Na Hang NR, Ba Be NP and Yok Don NP) and their adjacent buffer zones. Yok Don Component: • Evaluation of conservation priorities and operations, and the development of an agenda for conservation-oriented activities. • Participatory Resource Use Planning and the development of community-based approaches to natural resources conservation, including piloting of Government legislation for the devolution of responsibility for natural resource protection to local communities (fisheries management, etc.). • Capacity building of forest protection and technical divisions of the management authority. • Introduction of management planning and monitoring systems. Ba Be-Na Hang Conservation Complex Component: • Evaluation of conservation priorities and development of an agenda for conservation-oriented activities. • Development of community-based approaches to natural resources conservation (lake management). • Capacity building of forest protection and technical divisions of the management authority. • Landscape level analysis, identification and initiation of new protected areas for biodiversity hotspots (two new protected areas established). • Introduction of management planning and monitoring systems. • Development of conservation action plans for endangered species, draft EIA/mitigation plan for a major dam construction and draft EIA/mitigation plans for in-reserve villages. • From 2002, also involved in national-level discussion concerning needs for policy change in the way in which Vietnamese protected areas are managed. • Social Forestry & Nature Conservation (SFNC) Project– funded by EC : An ICDP that aimed to develop an appropriate conservation and management programme for Pu Mat NP and buffer zone, linked to livelihoods improvement of the population in the buffer zone. In the core zone, the project has assisted the Management Authority to prepare and implement an effective conservation and management programme. In the buffer zone the project has supported the adoption of sustainable resource management (especially of upland forests) , policy and legislation development, the re-orientation of forest enterprises towards a market economy, and the strengthening of the local forestry authorities to better design, implement and monitor forest conservation and management plans .
• The Social and Environmental Management Framework & Operational Plan for Nam Theun 2 Watershed, Lao PDR– funded by The World Bank: FRR provided technical contributions to the evaluation of this project, which secures long-term funding for an important protected area. • Project Development for Review of Environmental & Protected Area Policy in Vietnam– funded by UNDP/IUCN: • Investigating The Level of Wildlife Trade in Vietnam & Its Links With Surrounding Countries (Collaboration with TRAFFIC)- funded by The World Bank • Expert Review of the Forest Sector Development Project– funded by The World Bank FRR worked with Fauna & Flora International on a primate-focused conservation programme to ensure the continued existence of the critically endangered eastern black crested gibbon and it's habitat. FRR provided technical assistance in the implementation of community based conservation initiatives, project design and planning, capacity building for monitoring and on the ground management as well as biodiversity surveys. • The Social and Environmental Management Framework & Operational Plan for Nam Theun 2 Watershed, Lao PDR– funded by The World Bank: FRR has spent the last 2 years providing technical advice, capacity building and backstopping services for biodiversity assessments (carried out by indigenous scientific institutions) in Ha Tinh and Nghe An provinces. |
